Ever admired an old hand-painted shop sign and wondered how it was made?
This course introduces students to hand-painted signwriting. Participants are introduced to basic brush techniques, typography styles, some layout principles, and an invitation to use a proper signwriting brush to practice the techniques at the one day course.

Beginners and intermediate students interested in lettering or design. No prior experience required for beginners; intermediate painters can refine brush control and letter shape.

 

  • Materials Provided: Reference styles to copy, practice paper, practice brushes and paint.
  • Additional Info: Specialised brushes will be available for purchase on-site.
  • What to Wear: Wear clothes you don't mind getting paint on.
  • Do I Keep My Work? Yes! Your practice is yours to take home at the end of the course.

Chris Field

Chris Field is a master signpainter and owner of Field Signs. Chris brings a lifetime of hands-on commercial experience, deep trade knowledge, and genuine enthusiasm. Known for his keen eye for design and effortless brush control, Chris loves nothing more than sharing the art of traditional hand-lettering with others.

Driven by a passion to keep the craft thriving, he founded the Letterheads movement in New Zealand in 1997 to nurture and pass on signwriting skills to future generations—earning him Life Membership with both the New Zealand Sign and Display Association (NZSDA) and Australian Letterheads.

Warm, approachable, and always encouraging, Chris creates an engaging environment where students of all levels can gain confidence and discover the craft of signwriting. Examples of his work can be viewed in the gallery at fieldsigns.co.nz and also samples at the introduction course.
