Getting Your Learner Licence (Class 1 – Car)

The first step to obtaining your learners licence is to study up on the Road Code. There are several ways of doing this:

1. Get the official NZTA Road Code book (available at Oneroa Paper Plus, or AA online)
https://shop.aa.co.nz/collections/a-new-journey

2. View the official NZTA Road Code online
https://www.nzta.govt.nz/roadcode/general-road-code/

3. Drive.govt.nz interactive website (click the ‘I want to get my licence’ link)
https://drive.govt.nz/

Waka Kotahi NZTA also provides a good overview of the entire process here: ‘How to get a learners licence‘.

You can also use the free online tests at https://www.drivingtests.co.nz/roadcode/car/. By using the ‘Modules’ as listed on the ‘Car’ page, you can practice answering every single question from the book. This makes it more comprehensive than other websites. It’s free and you can also create a free account to track your progress.

You can also book in for our free ‘Road Code’ workshop at Waiheke Adult Learning (WAL)
https://www.wal.org.nz/courses/road-code/

Once you are ready to do the test (and can successfully complete a mock test at https://drive.govt.nz/), you can apply for your learners here on the island at the AA mobile unit (at Waiheke Adult Learning) every 1st & 3rd Wednesday of each month, from 9:30am – 4pm.
