A  course for learning the waiata of Waiheke to support our marae and our children at community events.

This course is held at the Waiheke Sustainability Centre (Old Oneroa Bowling Club), Mako Street, Oneroa

Course Details

Learn the words and music of waiata from the Marae and three schools on Waiheke Island. This course is designed to create confidence and skills for the participants to joyfully engage in community events., e.g. Waitangi Day, Matariki, pōwhiri, and school celebrations. Participants will also improve their understanding of Te Reo and Tikanga Māori and be better able to support their children and grandchildren in their learning.

This is a course for all, and in particular parents and grandparents to learn the waiata their children sing in their schools and on the marae.

A weekly koha is appreciated to cover expenses such as hot drinks, photocopying and administration.

Tutor

Jan Newton is a passionate advocate for the use of Te Reo by all members of society. He has been involved in kapa haka since 1993 and held regular waiata gatherings. He believes singing waiata is a way forward for all to engage with Te Reo and Tikanga Maori. He began learning waiata to support his children during their schooling and is keen to share this learning with a wider audience.
