Course Details

Get creative and save money by learning the art and technology of sewing!

This course is designed for those new to sewing and will teach the fundamental skills through making a simple item or garment. It will teach you how to lay your pattern on the material, correctly cut out fabric and sew garments. At the conclusion of the course you will have some basic skills, more confidence and a completed garment. Places on this course are limited.

This course will be followed by a Sewing – Next Steps Course (Time and Date TBA) so feel free to register your interest for this when you enrol.

What you will learn:

  • Choosing the right size pattern
  • Reading and following the pattern
  • Laying and cutting your fabric
  • Threading and using a sewing machine
  • Sewing your item or garment together

Materials:

Some materials will be available for the first class and you can discuss your project idea with your tutor. You will need to bring a simple pattern, pins, material, zip, thread, interfacing, etc. It is not necessary to bring your fabric on the first night and it may be beneficial to leave the buying of your fabric until after your first class so your tutor can advise you.

Equipment:

You will need to bring your own machine (and instruction booklet, scissors and tailors chalk. If you have any questions about what to bring please contact us at the time of enrolment for further advice.

Tutor

Jane Scarles is an experienced sewer and tutor. She teaches a range of different classes at Waiheke Adult Learning including digital literacy, sewing, literacy and numeracy. She enjoys the creative process of sewing and loves sharing her passion with other people.
