Course Details

This course will grow your understanding of Te Reo Māori and the Māori history of Waiheke. In this course you will learn greetings, vocabulary, pronunciation, place names, directions and everyday exchanges.Tikanga, and local stories of Waiheke will also be shared to provide an understanding and context of Māori on Waiheke.

An essential course for all who want a richer understanding of our island and it’s heritage and particularly framed for those engaging with visitors to Waiheke.

Jan Newton is a passionate advocate for the use of Te Reo by all members of society. He has been involved in kapa haka since 1993 and he has participated in a year long Te Atarangi course. Two years ago he returned to school as a year 13 student to increase his knowledge of Te Reo me ngā tikanga Māori. Jan has been teaching Waiata and Te Reo Māori on Waiheke for the past several years, supporting and enriching our community.
